A restavec is a Haitian child slave. I write about this terrible institution, fueled by Haiti's poverty and political isolation, in my MFA thesis, Icara Night. The novel was inspired from my time in Haiti as an Richter-ASP grant recipient, along with my colleagues from Troupe Ayizan, an African-Haitian dance troupe led by Professor Elizabeth Chin at Occidental College. Tonight I talk about the harder aspects of that trip as a guest speaker at my local Rotary Club.
