A restavec is a Haitian child slave. I write about this terrible institution, fueled by Haiti's poverty and political isolation, in my MFA thesis, Icara Night. The novel was inspired from my time in Haiti as an Richter-ASP grant recipient, along with my colleagues from Troupe Ayizan, an African-Haitian dance troupe led by Professor Elizabeth Chin at Occidental College. Tonight I talk about the harder aspects of that trip as a guest speaker at my local Rotary Club.
For all of us who believe there is not one way. One genre. One spirit. One answer. Or even one question. This blog is for the writer before she was so, as well as for the reader who defies her expectations every time: it is for the poets, satirists, fiction writers, essayists, diarists, and ancient word wanderers; this blog is for the infinitely unwritten. To each, a celebration. A celebration to all.
